Kine Graffiti and Bluescope Steel - Around the World in Twenty Days

Around the world in 20 days.
Well, not quite the world but if we say so ourselves, filming for Bluescope Steel’s staff induction video in Indonesia, Thailand, China and the US in just under three weeks wasn’t bad going.
Hitting the ground in Jakarta, Bangkok, Shanghai, Seattle, Portland and Kansas City, we dashed hither and thither shooting a multitude of staff interviews and every useful bit of plant, office and construction overlay we could find. But in all the countries and cities we visited, we would never have achieved the same breadth and quality of coverage without the help of Bluescope’s wonderfully friendly and efficient H.R. staff. Nothing seemed too much trouble for them and though they were busy people indeed, they always made us feel we were their sole concern.

Staff interviews can often seem stiff and stilted but having been well backgrounded rather than minutely rehearsed, Bluescope’s people had a genuinely easy going and relaxed presence that projected a warm and inviting image of the company. Editing awaits filming visits to the company’s Port Kembla and Westernport plants but when it happens, we’ll be selecting our interview grabs from an abundance of excellence. So was it really all work and no play? Well, not entirely, but when we did get out and about, it was with cameras in hand to capture the local colour that underlines the truly international character of this Australian company. In China, for instance, we capped off a Sunday on Shanghai’s historic ‘Bund’ and its surrounding streets and markets with a night cruise on the Huangpu, filming its ceaseless parade of gaudy river boats, dimly lit barges and container sized floating T.V. screens, advertising everything from toothpaste to apartments.

With just a couple of spare hours in Bangkok, we headed for the Klongs [canals] where the narrow commuter ferries zoom between the high rise with hair raising rapidity, their youthful conductors collecting fares from the outside of the boat, while hanging on to a strand of rope to steady themselves on the narrow strip of deck set aside for their feet.
Similarly strapped for spare time in Seattle, we took a minibus tour through the city, stopping for a strict fifteen minutes at historic precincts like the old riverside markets and hurling ourselves out of the bus for three minute ‘photo ops’ at specific points of interest such as the Space Needle.
And as if we hadn’t had enough of aeroplanes during countless hours of flying, we visited the Evergreen Air and Space Museum near Portland, Oregon. With its breathtaking assembly of rare, exotic and revered flying machines it’s a Mecca for aircraft buffs, especially since it houses, in all its re-assembled and refurbished glory, that icon of flying icons, the ‘Spruce Goose’.

But for sheer spectacle, Mount St. Helens in Washington State took the cake. As you zig zag towards it, you glimpse it through the trees, looming ever closer and larger. And though the road ends at an observatory eight kilometres shy of its crater, it’s still enormously and ominously impressive, with the three hundred metre granite plug thrown up in the wake of its last major eruption in 1980 still belching steam - just to remind you that one day it’ll all happen again.
