As far as Melbourne Victoria Australia’s now dwindling supplies of drinking water are concerned, we’ve been both using and loosing far too much of it for far too long.

Of course there are many uses for which the highest quality drinking water has no substitute - not the least of which is drinking. But washing the car, watering the garden and perhaps most inexplicably of all, flushing the toilet, why do we need our best and purest for these sorts of uses?

For Melbourne water supplier, South East Water, the answer is simple, we don’t need drinking water for any of these uses because high quality ‘Class A’ recycled water is a more than adequate substitute and one that will substantially cut the amount of fresh drinking water we need to draw from our reservoirs.

With the reliable and effective filtering technology already in situ, South East Water has begun supplying both fresh and recycled water to new housing estates. But though we live in ‘the dry continent’ - and it’s getting dryer - the idea of using recycled water in and around our homes is new to us and to engage the enthusiastic acceptance of developers, builders and consumers still requires some persuasion.

Enter Kine Graffiti. Our first task for South East Water was to produce a simple and straightforward explanation of what recycled water is, how it’s produced, how it’s already used and how the procedures the company follows in supplying it make it perfectly safe for the domestic uses for which it’s intended.

Supplying both fresh and recycled water is called ‘dual reticulation’ and to open our four minute DVD / web video, we used a simple but effective combination of live action and still images combined with an animated graphic of the two pipes ‘growing’ underground and via a matching dissolve popping up through the lawn as the separate meters and taps still we had previously shot for this purpose.

From South East Water’s perspective, the production was an outstanding success and having produced a second official ‘launch’ DVD, for the first estate to have ‘dual reticulation’, we’re now producing a instructional video for the company and private plumbers who’ll be providing future installations.
